Wet Plate Collodion Process

WHAT?
Three day advanced workshop of wet plate collodion negative process and a workshop on salt and albumen print process. We will start with ambrotype (wet plate collodion positive on glass) just to get the whole spectrum of collodion process, but we will focus on collodion negative and printing techniques. We will learn how to manipulate collodion density and which density is good for what printing process. Please look at the detailed program at the end of this page.

18th, 19th and 20th of September 2019. We start the day at 8:57 and end the day at 19:07

WHO?
This is an advanced course, but we will go from the beginning so if you have no experience, you will still be able to follow and make beautiful plates and prints.

HOW MUCH?
Three day workshop costs 600 EUR and that includes all material cost and detailed hand out notes with all the steps and receipts. It does not include food and accommodation.

ACCOMODATION?
I recommend RaMar accommodation (LINK) But if you are coming by car, there are more options.  Five kilometers away, in Dolenjske Toplice there are options like camping (LINK), Hotel Pri Mostu is really nice place and in Novo mesto that is 9 km away there is also Hostel Situla. There are many other options on Booking.com.

RESERVATION?
The workshop is limited to four participants and you get your place by paying the reservation of 100 EUR. The reservation fee is 80% refundable three weeks before the workshop. The rest you pay at the beginning of the workshop. I want you to feel comfortable and pay when you will be here, but I do need to collect the reservation fee.

HOW TO GET HERE?
AIRPORTS:
The closest airport is Ljubljana, Slovenia
The second closest airport is Zagreb, Croatia
Then there are two more airports in the vicinity: Klagenfurt (AT), Treviso (IT)

BUS, TRAIN
If you will come by buss or train, go to Novo mesto. From Novo mesto busses are going to Straža, but the connection is not that good, so I can pick you up and drop you to your accomodation place.

DISCOUNT FOR TAKING TWO WORKSHOPS
After this wet plate collodion workshop, I’m having immediately a workshop on carbon printing (LINK), so if you would want to stay for two more days and take the workshop on carbon printing, you get a discount of 150 EUR on the price for two workshops. So the price for collodion negative, salt printing, albumen printing and carbon printing workshop in the period of five days, between 20nd and 24th of March 2019 is 750 EUR.

SUMMERY:

DAY ONE

  • introduction to the processes.
  • the difference between wet plate collodion positive and negative.
  • reviewing examples of negatives and prints we are expected to be making during the workshop.
  • preparation of chemistry and cleaning plates.

DAY TWO

  • Before lunch we will go outdoor and make some landscape plates.
  • participants will learn how to make different densities of wet plate negatives.
  • Redeveloping. The second development after fixing, for boosting density of collodion negative.
  • What light is appropriate for wet plate negative and how to work in inappropriate light.
  • Making a portrait with ambient light or with studio flashes.
  • Varnishing glass negatives.
  • Preparing albumen for printing process.
  • Preparing gelatin for salt print process.
  • Seizing paper for salt print process.
  • Demonstration of salt and albumen printing process.

DAY THREE

  • Floating paper on albumen
  • Albumen print process (printing the collodion negatives we will make)
  • Salt print process (printing the collodion negatives we will make)
  • Toning with goldchloride.
  • Waxing salt prints.

Each participant will receive notes with all the receipts and the most important points to remember.

Film & Darkroom Workshop 5th, 6th and 7th of April 2019

 

THE MISSION:
This workshop is covering film photography and its advantages and disadvantages. In this one three day workshop the participant will use different cameras from small to large format, expose films, develop films and make prints. On the end we will also cover advanced creative and archival techniques of toning with selenium and / or sulphide toner, drying prints on glass or with ferrotyping technique for high glossy surface and extra tonality.

11:30 – 19:00 photographing on different locations

SATURDAY 6th of April 2019

  • short basics on sensitometry
  • How to mix developer
  • which developer is good for which occasion
  • How to load a film in developing tank and
  • How to load a film in a dark changing bag
  • Developing times and densitometry
  • Developing, washing, fixing, washing, drying
  • Archival storage of negatives

13:00-14:00 Lunch break

14:00 Making contact copies from negatives
15:00 – 19:00 Making first prints

SUNDAY 7th of April

Each of the participants will make a few contact copies of negatives and few enlarged prints of size 24×30 cm and one photo on 50x60cm paper. One enlargement 50×60 cm is included in the the price of the workshop, but it is possible to print more at the additional cost of 10 EUR per print.

We will learn how to print with gradation filters, dodge and burn certain areas of the print and on the end we will tone our prints for aesthetic and archival quality. The toning part includes advanced toning technique of split toning with sulphide and selenium toners.

  • The beautiful Nikon F3 – 35mm camera
  • Twin lens camera Mamiya C330 format 6×6
  • Viewfinder Fuji GSW 690, format 6x9cm, also known as Texas Leica
  • Famous Linhof Tehnorama, format 6×17 cm
  • Wooden large format camera ShenHao, format 4×5″
  • Tripods, filters, lightmeters
  • And please bring your camera too

Three day workshop costs 450 EUR and that includes all material costs, from large format silver-gelatine photo papers, films, developer, toners (sulphide and selenium). The price does not include food and accommodation. If you are interested only in darkroom part of the workshop, you may join us on Saturday and Sunday and the price will be lower, 350 EUR.

The workshop is limited to four participants and you get your place by paying the reservation of 100 EUR. The rest you pay at the start of the workshop. The reservation fee is 90% refundable three weeks before the workshop, but after that, it’s not refundable.
